Dog Separation Anxiety Management

ree

When a dog gets super stressed out being left alone, they can show it in some pretty dramatic ways! Think of them as tiny, furry rock stars who trash the place when their favorite fan (you!) leaves the building. This can look like chewing up furniture, barking their heads off, or getting really upset.

Luckily, you can help them become more confident and independent. It's all about making alone time less scary and more of a chill party.

Here's your superstar training guide:

🚶‍♂️Practice makes perfect: Start with super short "goodbyes," like just a few minutes, and slowly make them longer. This shows your dog you always come back!

🔑 Make goodbyes a treat: Pair your departure cues (like grabbing your keys or coat) with something awesome, like a special treat or a fun puzzle toy they only get when you leave.

🎵 Create their personal VIP lounge: Set up a comfy, cozy spot just for them. Think soft blankets, their favorite toys, and maybe some calming music or a familiar scent to help them feel safe.

🧩 Keep their brain busy: Give them puzzle feeders or chew toys. These are great for distracting them and redirecting that worried energy into something productive.

📆 Stick to a schedule: Dogs thrive on routine. Keep mealtimes and walks consistent so they know what to expect.

In really tough cases, a vet might suggest things like calming diffusers or even medication, such as CBD, which has show very positive results in pets. But, the most important thing is to avoid making it worse. Never punish them for their anxiety, and try to keep your own departures low-key and not a big emotional event.
